THE NORTHGUARD LEGIO VI VICTRIX

The Northguard was founded by the Chairman Eddie Barrass. in 1989. There are at present 12 Roman soldiers of different periods of the Roman occupation of England. The society was not formed to re-enact but to teach people about the life and times of soldiers and citizens of Rome. The group also has female members and likes to encourage young people to join and learn.  The VI Victrix is a  living history society that meets the first Thursday of every month. The men of society try to create the military side of the Roman Empire, and the ladies maintain the civilian side.  The society encourages  the young members to ask as many questions as possible.  They are given encouragement to add as much input as they can into the club activities and meetings. The societies home site is called Binchester. or Vinovia. our home site is one of the oldest military bathhouses in England.   The hypercaust, under floor heating system, is three times the size of the one at the Roman Fort  known as Housesteads up on Hadrians Wall. Our Legion the VI VICTRIX. came to England from lower Germany North Germany to build  Hadrians wall in the year 121 A.D. along with the 3 other legions, ours was the last  to leave England. to increase the fortification of Rome. at the fall western part of the empire in the year 408 / 410 A.D.  Most of the forts in the north of  England. were built by the VI Victrix, the Legions main base was at York EBVRACVM  the last soldiers to man Vinovia were Auxiliary & cavalry, cavalry call ala.
 The society will do talks and or visual displays, but will have to charge a fee for travelling and accommodation, schools are welcomed, the fees will be negotiated in advance.  The society can turn out soldiers of all periods that the Romans occupied Great Britain.  The society also has links with societies based in the South of England, Scotland, and as far a field as Rome
The society possesses 6 Roman Catapults, two Roman tents, numerous uniforms and various other pieces of equipment and weapons for display..
